On Charles Bridge

Before my half-open eye
A golden berry, glistening, immaculate and dripping wet.
Suspended in the greymist mingling
The black running river
And Charles Bridge bulk.

Eyes half-closed, half-open
I see water, rain, wet blackstones.
My eyes follow a glimmer of light
On a sharp branch from the dark bank
I stand gazing at the twisted branch and blink.
And remember golden days when sunlight fell
Like drops of honey on berries
Glistening liquid glowing
Immaculate shiny flowing
Dripping, falling into the river.

I see a white Christmas berry speckled in red,
And hear childhood campfires crackling;
Merry bells ringing,
Dinging, donging,
So long ago.

With open eyes I gaze on Charles Bridge---
Slow, slurping river
Dark stoney expanse.
Gulls gaggling
For bread balls
From black-gloved girls’ hands.

Bridges’ passengers pacing,
Clopping, thudding, clicking.
Voices in language rising and falling.
So many faces
Saints’ stoney stare
Frozen footbridge eternal
Neverchanging, glaring
In the mist,
In the fog.
I hear a melody rising from my feet into my heart;
Symphonic melody pulsing all around me.
No more walls, the thundering from the sidewalk,
The roar of dull rhythm rises
And squanders my fragile sound.
In the corridor of calmness I recapture the melody but it is caged and small.

I walk out once again on Charles Bridge
And hear exact nightsounds in all of their beauty and squalor,
And keep on walking.

Salvador Dalvador

Reality schmeality
Porky picka pie
Crab a black crow
Melt your money in the dough
Pillsbury punks
Cripple the preacher---
Nothing is as it was before
Death is not a liar
Death is not maiden fernfoil hair
Life alone a beacon
In utter pitch and void
Candles’ fires cannot dim.
God, a dealer of cards,
Catch them as they fall!
And coil ‘round the till once more.

Serpentine round
Better to drown
Better the snake to bite
Frosty venom sunk like a tarpon.
Flesh, flesh!
Screaming, stinking pigs in the muddy fields.
Sacred cows whose glassy eyes radiate and absorb my love.
Tick tocking ripping the calendar
Slipping, greasy serpent time.
Wild flurry oak leaves clatter,
Turn and assail me in some distant symphony
Whisper to my waxchoked ear
Finer thoughts of beauty
Like powder drifts and mutilated mushrooms
Witness man’s slaughter in cool wet grass.

I alone witness the mountainous crime.
To shoulder the guilt alone and smile
On the leaf wet streets of late October
Panty girls hefty breasty bestial dance
Halloween’s candy choked children,
The dead, the glaring moon
All holiness and bliss
All love and love’s love above all!

The world was left the same when
I returned to this room. I saw
all of the things were in order
but some dust had fallen.

And as I meditated upon this painting by Magritte.
I recalled my waking dream
and how could it be that
I saw you sitting there
in this silent, still waiting room?

Staring into that quiet room,
I turned and saw another
face out of a dream

There were two in this dream.

Why is that she is always waiting there?

I sat on the couch, Christmas music,
French, conversation, children running
to and fro scrambling around.

Shall we leave this house
to walk in the evening air?

Shall we not explore the evening roads?

Come, for these lovers have wasted
what is more precious to me and you

Come let us explore the very
landscapes pf this dream
to fall from the color and
bright lights onto the damp evening
wet roads.

There is nothing here
Nothing at all
that has not been torn or twisted
in passionate debauchery.
Why do I remember you today,
everywhere I go?
Why do I see you – crossed arms in
the sculpture?
Why are you 7 thousand miles away?

Not one year has passed
Yet we have permanently banished
our crime.
Do not rouse me from my slumber
and wake me to this day
Oh, do not harm these dusty
rooms for I have fallen in sleep.

All memories of Permanent Beauty.
Anaesthetize my senses
with Nostalgia.

Why should I care, why should I
remember, why should I wait?

Why this dream?

Every one of the one hundred letters
I never sent
Every one of the thousand
words I write for you.

Every syllable, every punctuation,
contradicts
every vocal sound
Our mind turned against
itself, our dialogue was spent
The communication fell through
and every word failed
to reach its home.

I am tired from this struggle
against forms and space
since passion entered the room
the young lovers in my dream,
to whom I said “quit these
premises.” And since they wouldn’t
leave I say let us go,
and leave this house
and walk with the evening air.

This house is condemned
and the evening air
calls me forth in mystic purity.
Why does the earth heave and pull
to greet me with a new dawn
filtering the mist with light strands;
painting a fresh horizon?

I am stranded now
for I have abandoned
all that I have loved or held near
I have one refuge
that is sacred.

Wearing no swaddling clothes
I wriggle alone in the dewy grass
and count my first breaths 1,2,3.
having won my lonely place
above, below before me
on either side
no obstacles, no eyes meet my gaze.

Awake New World
for I am your gift;
lift me up, spin me round
dearer shall we make this day!

But words to my lips rise
jumble and fall
to the jagged earth,
and like mushrooms melt away.

Nature stands against
So I forge my will through her
My speech
is silent on the earth's ear
Swallowed up in the sear of the sun.

To forge an endless highway
deep into the day
further and further out toward the surface
of all things---
I stand on the stormy edge at midday:
precise walls,
this exact moment...

To bear no more the dry surface
To carve a course toward the distant sea.

Butterfly Fragment

Orange, and black
Fluttering wings
Over the painted highlands
Pounded on heavy winds
Alighting to heights
Tossing on blonde fields
Caught in the cloud gathering blue horizon.

Catapulting the hard glass,
Sucked into an invisible vortex of memory
Of nature’s wetness and heft,
Of infancy and Spring.

Powdering the glass
In yellowy red particles
Paper confetti on the cool roadside
Fallen from Autumn’s parade.
